Whether or not you owe state income taxes or expect a refund, the State of North Carolina still requires you to file North Carolina Form D-410 for a state tax extension. As long as the form is accurate and turned in on time, you'll be granted a six month tax extension.

Filing an North Carolina tax extension does not grant you extra time to pay any tax balance due. Your balance must be paid by April 15 to avoid possible penalties.
